fxDreema Alternative: When a Typed Graph Beats Blocks

TradeSmithy Team5 min read

Short answer: fxDreema is a long-established, browser-based block builder for MT4 and MT5, free for simple projects, with a very large block library. A typed node graph such as TradeSmithy is the better fit if you want an AI assistant that edits your strategy, one graph that exports to both MQL4 and MQL5, and server-side backtests and a marketplace in the same place. fxDreema is the better fit if you need pending orders, time filters or chart-object logic today.

Both are legitimate ways to build an Expert Advisor without writing MQL. This is an honest look at the differences.

How does fxDreema work?

fxDreema represents a strategy as blocks joined by connections. A connection mostly means "then": when this block passes, run the next one. Conditions, trade actions, loops, timers and chart objects are all blocks, and the library has grown over many years to cover a lot of MetaTrader. It runs in the browser, exports MQL4 and MQL5, and is free for simple projects, with a paid licence for larger ones.

Its strengths are real: breadth, maturity, and a community forum full of solved problems.

How is a typed node graph different?

In TradeSmithy, a connection carries a value as well as an order of execution, and every port has a type — numeric, boolean, string, or a variable reference. An RSI output is a number; a comparison output is a boolean; a buy node's lot port only accepts a number. The canvas refuses a wire whose types do not agree, which catches a whole category of mistakes before any code exists. We list every rule and the reasoning in why the builder refused that connection.

Where TradeSmithy does better

An assistant that cannot break your strategy. You can say "add a trailing stop that starts after 30 pips of profit" and the assistant changes the graph. Anything it produces that does not fit the schema — a port that does not exist, an illegal indicator setting — is rejected before it reaches the canvas. What it can and cannot change.

MQL4 and MQL5 from one graph. A project targets a platform, and switching it rewrites nothing: the builder flags indicators the new platform lacks and exports the other language. Each language gets its own generator, because MQL4 is not a dialect of MQL5.

Inputs as wires. Any indicator period or threshold can be wired to an EA input, so it is adjustable in the terminal and sweepable in MetaTrader's optimizer. How parameter ports work.

Test and sell in the same place. Pro accounts queue backtests on our servers, and a strategy can be published with a backtest our runner performed on that exact graph. What a buyer receives.

Where fxDreema is still stronger

  • Pending orders. TradeSmithy places market orders only.
  • Time and session filters. There is no time-of-day node yet, so a London session breakout is not buildable as such.
  • Breadth. Years of blocks for niche MetaTrader features.
  • Free for simple projects with no monthly export cap.

If your strategy depends on the first two, fxDreema is the better tool today.

Can I move an fxDreema project to TradeSmithy?

There is no importer. Rebuilding is usually quick, because most strategies are a handful of conditions and actions — and it is a good moment to check the logic still says what you think it says. Start from the closest template rather than a blank canvas.

Try the alternative on one strategy

The only comparison that matters is your own strategy. Start free on TradeSmithy, rebuild one fxDreema project on the canvas, and export it. The Free plan includes the full builder and one MQL4 or MQL5 export a month; the AI assistant and server backtests are on Pro. For the wider field, see our comparison of EA builders.

Frequently asked questions

Is fxDreema free?

It is free for simple projects, with a paid licence for larger ones. Check its current limits on the fxDreema site.

Is there an fxDreema alternative with AI?

Yes. TradeSmithy's assistant edits the strategy graph directly, and every change is validated before it appears on the canvas.

Which is better for MT5, fxDreema or TradeSmithy?

Both export MQL5. Choose fxDreema for pending orders and time filters; choose TradeSmithy for typed connections, AI editing, server backtests and selling.

Do both give me the source code?

Yes. Both produce MQL source you compile in MetaEditor.
